Motorcycle licence upgrade refresher
Having taken your restricted full motorcycle test (A1 or A2), two years later you can upgrade your licence to enable you to ride larger machines.
To upgrade your motorcycle licence (in accordance to the 3rd EU driving licence directive) to so you are licenced to ride a larger motorcycle you will need to complete the practicle parts of the motorcycle test on a larger machine.
Upgrade A2 to A motorcycle licence. Use a motorcycle of 595cc or above with a minimum of 54 bhp.
Upgrade A1 to A2 motorcycle licence. Use a motorcycle of 395cc or above between 33 and 47 bhp.
As an experienced rider holding a restricted A1 or A2 motorcycle licence, a refresher course will give you the best chance of passing the practical motorcycle test on a larger machine. A2 to A motorcycle licence upgrade (35kw/47bhp to unrestricted)
With an exsisting category A2 motorcycle licence (35kw / 47bhp motorcycle licence) for 2 years (or over 24 with some experience on bigger bikes with your category A2 motorcycle licence), you can upgrade to a full unrestricted category A motorcycle licence. (In accordance with the 3rd EU driving directive) This is achieved by taking the practical part of the test again (module 1 and module 2) on a larger (big bike) motorcycle. (595cc / 600cc machine with at least 54bhp / 40kw)
This refresher course is perfect to ensue you can manually handle and manoeuvre a bigger bike, and check your riding standards have not slipped since you gained your A2 motorcycle licence. Any other changes in requirements since you passed your A2 motorcycle test will also be explained and our professional qualified motorcycle instructors will ensure you are up to standard ready for the big bike test.
If you took your A2 test (on a 125cc machine) before the 19th January 2013, the 33bhp restriction will automatically be removed after 2 years from the date you passed your A2 motorcycle test. (automatically upgrades to full category A)
However you may wish to upgrade your motorcycle licence to unlimited motorcycle licence before then the two years have expired (to unrestricted motorcycle Category A). This can be done once you are 24 or older and was formally known as "accelerated access"(see below)
This refresher course is suitable for the following riders
- You are over 23 years old (24+ years old) and have an existing A2 motorcycle licence regaurdless of when you took your test.
- You are over 20 years old (21+ years old) and have been riding for 2 years or more on an existing A2 taken after the 18th of January 2013

A1 (125cc) to A2 (35kw / 47bhp) motorcycle licence
So you took your test on a 125cc machine after the 3rd EU driving directive came into effect on the 19th January 2013, and you want to ride a bigger bike.
Once you have turned 19 you can ride a motorcycle with a maximum power of 47bhp or a larger bike restricted to 47bhp (but not derived from a machine of more than twice that power).

Introduction to Big Bikes, course so you can get used to the weight and power of the larger machine. Following the refresher course with one of our professional instructors will cover the module 1 motorcycle test manoeuvres and confirm your road riding standards have not slipped. Any other changes in requirements since you passed your A1 motorcycle test will also be explained and we'll ensure you are up to standard ready for the bigger bike test.

A1 (125cc) to A (unrestricted) motorcycle licence
So you took your test on a 125cc machine after the 3rd EU driving directive came into effect on the 19th January 2013, and you want to ride an unrestricted motorcycle.
Once you have turned 24 you can re-take your motorcycle test (and pass) on a category A motorcycle and the ride unrestriced motorcycles.
